How to Prevent Premature Gutter Failure

Premature gutter failure is one of the things you, as a homeowner, should take measures to prevent. Your gutters direct water away from your property and help prevent damage to the foundations, the roof, and the house’s surrounding areas. In today’s post, Mile High Gutter shares a quick guide to preventing premature gutter failure.

Clean Your Gutters Regularly

Cleaning and maintenance is the most straightforward yet effective way to avert gutter failure. Over time, gutters can collect leaves, twigs and other debris, which can lead to clogging that can result in water overflow. This defeats the purpose of having gutters. Ideally, gutters need to be cleaned at least once a year, or twice if you have trees on your property. Regular inspections can help you decide when to best clean your gutters.

Invest in Proper Installation

If your gutters are due for replacement, investing in proper installation through an experienced gutter contractor can go a long way in preventing issues that lead to gutter failure. Correctly-pitched gutters ensure efficient water flow and help avoid standing water, which prevents issues such as corrosion and mold growth. Properly-attached fasteners keep the gutters firmly attached to the fascia and prevents sagging and detachment.

Another feature that’s worth investing in is seamless gutters. Fewer seams means a lower risk of developing leaks and corrosion. Standard gutter systems are typically built using 10-foot lengths of gutter troughs. Sometimes the seams where these lengths are joined have exposed bare metal that quickly rust with continued exposure to the elements.

Install a Leaf Protection System

Gutter guards, gutter covers, or leaf protection systems are designed to keep solid matter like leaves out of the gutter troughs. By keeping leaves and debris at bay, you won’t have to clean and maintain gutters as often. In addition to the convenience, gutter protection systems can help ensure durability and functionality. Most types of leaf protection systems can be installed on existing gutters — you don’t have to wait until your gutters are due for replacement to have them installed.
